This is a fun! Listen to “The Score” podcast interview with John Powell about this score. His respect for John Williams and Star Wars is evident, and his desire to turn out something fitting is truly evident. Whether you like every second or not, you can tell from that interview that this music came from a place of deep love for this franchise’s music legacy. Williams’ Han Theme is new and fun, almost a western/70’s Sci-Fi mix, sounding old Star Trek-esque at times, but still with the Williams’ flair. It’s all new in the sense that it doesn’t utilize old riffs but still fits perfectly in the canon. Powell builds off that, old music, and his own new work to create an action packed score that is a lot of fun, paying tribute to the old and bringing in the new.
